His designs are modernist marvels and his intentions reveal a fashionable way of dealing with the global food crisis. He is French designer Mathieu Lehanneur and his latest ecological – wonder design: The Local River Plant Aquarium has created ripples of excitement among viewers at the Artists Space in NY. His aquarium which is a unique combination of DIY vegetable garden and fish hatchery was on display from April 21st to June 21st, 2008.
His creation is an installation of local river ecosystem self contained in special glass tanks which is connected to the mini vegetable garden above which purifies the air in a neat glass capsule.
The futuristic design is one you can’t stop gazing at! And there’s no doubt that it can increase the beauty of your indoors manifold once installed and fully functional. This eco-art come modernistic décor piece infuses the use of hydroponics.
The veggies growing above in glass pods use water from the fish tank (this water is nitrate-rich as fishes excrete their wastes in it); extract nutrients from it and inturn filter the water which then gets consumed by the fishes in the hatchery below. This aquarium responds to the fresh food needs of those who don’t have enough outdoor space to grow vegetables!

In his heartfelt proclamation ‘Design is Dead’, famous designer Philippe Starck came to a realization that everything he’s ever designed is totally useless and so announced a retirement in coming days. But now the artist it seems is over with his mid-life crisis and is back with a very innovative product. This time it’s a wind turbine called “Democratic Ecology”.
The latter is a partially transparent plastic generator which the designer made alongwith manufacturer Pramac. With this product the designer has certainly used his talent to make a positive difference in the world. Atleast, one can say it’s a neat try! The turbine which was on display in a cube decorated with eco-talks (motivational messages), can generate between 20% and 60% of a typical home’s energy needs.
“Democratic Ecology” is targeted at those who are now thinking actively towards increasing sustainability and decreasing load on earth, by consuming lesser traditional energy sources. The price is however not so democratic with a single turbine costing about $630! The designer will have to come out with cheaper versions and also a way of incorporating these in households which refuse to give up on conventional methods in order to popularize his recently found eco-consciousness! However, let’s be optimistic that those who can afford “Democratic Ecology” would certainly go for it.

It may sound ironical but true. Whilst on one hand China together with India rebuffed to ink the Bali draft deal to cut carbon emissions, on other Chinese national has made an effort to lay down the first ever-contemporary bamboo bridge. This draws a gray line of difference between the hierarchies defined by top bureaucrats pretentious enough to contribute for a greener world and ground level ordinary men who know the way to reach their targets.
Initiated by the School of Civil Engineering of Hunan University, a year of R&D and trial & error went into grousing up the strength of the bamboo organization that ultimately became the viaduct as it was commenced formally on the 12 January. The bridge underwent the testing period with its first cargo of 8.6 tones. The bridge is said to be capable of shipping around 90 tones of inert mass. Now comes your way for its critical analyses. Will it be durable enough? Well, the bridge has already cleared the test as it has a life-value of 20 years. Also, it is budgeted than any concrete bridge available and the credit goes to its cheap bamboo.
