Redewin Reconstructs Eco-Fashion
Posted in Designer, Fashion on 28 September 2008

Redewin
There are fresh footsteps on the path of eco-fashion. They call themselves Redewin and sell unique classic and reconstructed clothes. Opening just last week, this fashion hub has caught on well with the eco-conscious masses who, look for green yet stylish outfits.
I find the concept of reconstructed clothing very interesting. Redewin takes button-ups, t-shirts, dresses, sweaters, jeans etc and stitch them together to create new fashion trends. So, you can be assured that the article you shop for will be unique.

Check out the Redewin website to discover some innovations in men’s, women’s and children’s fashion. And hey, you can pick up some recycled furnishings for your eco-house too.

Finding The Fish
Posted in Animals, Earth, Environment, Ocean, water on 10 August 2008

Oceanic life
The fish are dying. It may be shocking but the truth is, 25% of the world’s known fish species, especially tuna and cod, are at the brink of extinction. The oceanic ecological balance has gone berserk and as a last minute preventive measure, governments have banned fishing in certain areas. Apparently, EU pays 61 million dollars to Greenland every year so that Germany can continue fishing in its waters. Incidentally, Germans like their fish frozen thereby giving fisherman a lot of time to fish and ruin the ecological system even in far off areas.
Most developed countries and third world nations are to be blamed for this. The European Union’s strategies have been one of hypocrisy. In the garb of being green and environmental friendly, it has been allowing governments and industries to undertake large-scale fishing in foreign seas as well. This probably could be due to the free trade policies and also due to globalization that fishing companies have brazenly continued to exploit the oceanic populations. They need to be put a check on. Rising sea temperatures themselves have done a lot of damage to oceanic fauna.

Rod Surber’s Treesome

Artefacts created by Rod Surber
It’s a fallen tree that inspires eco-artist Rod Surber to make art. The reason is simple. When a tree falls in the forest, Rod hears it. Inspired by the easy availability of local timber that usually rots away, he decided to convert this natural resource into art. Believe it or not but Rod has created one-of-a-kind goblets, platters, bowls, bells, boxes and what not just out of scraps of wood.

Rod spends most of his days collecting the locally harvested wood at green recycling centres and residential yards (with permission, of course). Please note, each of his work is hand-sanded and polished with vegetable or food-grade oils, and is one of its own kind. The finishes and solvents he uses are biodegradable, free from petroleum and toxins. So if you eco-lovers are looking for a gift that no one could top, do make a stop by Rod’s.

Siemens Gigaset ECO Design Visions: Green is IN for Cellphones Too!
Posted in Designer, Eco-Friendly, Go green, Green, Products, Solar, Technology on 6 August 2008

Green rules the roost these days when it comes to colors, technology, fashion, lifestyle etc. Then why should cellphones be trailing behind in the green bandwagon? Electronics giant Siemens has roped in Formwelt Industrial Designs to come up with some innovative green models. The creative inputs of Hans-Henning Brabänder were also pooled in to produce the “Gigaset Eco Visions” “Leaf” and “Solar”. Looking elegant and eco-chick, these ultra-light models are carved out of 100% recyclable materials viz. liquid wood and eco-plastic. Formwelt Studio has kept in mind the eco-friendly quotient of each cellphone thus taking care of the components and materials (organic of course!), energy consumption, natural energy source for handsets (which comes from sunlight) and emissions (during production processes and post production as well). All in all, the designer firm has taken care that the two phones be designer yet recyclable.

Features of both the designs:

LEAF phone - reminds you of a lovely young leaf in spring! An invisible OLED display is present. Embedded in a translucent case, it provides the cell phone an unparallel finishing meant for futuristic products. Sensational haptics and substantial convenience are provided by eco plastics used in the frame.

SOLAR phone – cool concept, uses all-over solar cells on the surface. Absorbs energy directly from the sun thus being self-sustainable! Besides eco-plastics, the frame is made up of glass and metal as well. The design also combines OLED touchpad technology to give user a function-depending key indication on the cell phone’s display.

Million dollar question is – When are these hitting the market? I am sure Siemens will come up with an equally interesting eco-friendly ad campaign for these brilliantly green phones!

Hanging Eco-Retreat: An Eco-Sphere in Trees!
Posted in Architecture, Companies, Eco-Friendly, Go green, Green, Solar on 26 July 2008

Will you be amazed if I told you that bubbles made out of fiberglass can be eco-friendly? If yes, then you might as well be interested in knowing what these bubbles are, who makes them, what’s their use and likes…isn’t it?
A UK- based company ‘Our Planet Retreats’, manufactures prefab buildings which are bubble-shaped eco-resorts which you can purchase at affordable prices! The company’s eco-sphere is actually a tree house giving you a feel of how Tarzan might have felt living on trees. What’s more Tarzan never had the modern day comforts which this eco-sphere comes laced with!
The cost of constructing one for you can be different and depends upon whether you belong to a developing country or a developed one. But, Our Planet Retreats has innovative ideas like communal financing to help buy you one for your own special ecological retreat in exotic locations like Papua New Guinea, Vanatu and Philippines.

The floating eco-sphere can be accessed by stairs that lead you to it. The bubble-shaped house is crafted so as to leave a minimum environmental impact. Carved out of hard fiberglass, it is well insulated & wired, bears large windows for the sunshine to pour in and has lights, switches and outlets inside! This portable accommodation spells out sustainability when it comes to energy options-mini solar panels & solar water heating systems. May I say, to me it resembles a cozy bird’s nest! :D

Our Planet Retreats offers simple steps to get involved with them. You need to buy a share or a sphere. The former will cost you $30 and the latter around $2,500. However at this price the sphere comes unfurnished! If you are among those who like to purchase fully-furnished accommodations then this spherical prefab could be yours at a higher price tag.

Any eco-resort is truly considered to be environmentally-oriented when it takes the locals under its wings. So does Our Planet Retreats! It has plans to employ locals for building its unique eco-spheres and they will be encourage to buy shares so as to strengthen the local economy by empowering native people. So, if you are truly green-minded, I’m sure this eco-sphere will delight you! ;)

In less than a fortnight’s time an enchantress will make her debut at the London Motor Show. She is Lotus’ new Eco Elise – the nouveau eco friendly cousin of Sports Elise. An entirely environmental-friendly concept, the car is inside out green! Don’t be confused. What I mean to say is, unlike, other green cars being launched by biggies of the motor world which primarily focus on cutting back the CO2 emission and switching over to hydrogen and biofuels; Eco Elise is a holistically green concept with every thing from the materials used to the tailpipe emissions is being taken care of with eco-concerns kept at the back of the maker’s mind!

A quickie on its USP’s:

It’s constructed from sustainable stuff - eco wool, sisal and hemp.
Even the car color comes from water-based paints.
Has a gear change display system integrated into the dashboard- so designed to advocate greener driving; changing gears at optimum point saves fuel and reduces emissions
To power ancillary electronic features, solar panels are installed on Eco Elise’s roof.
Weighs 32kg less than the standard Elise S!!! (in sync with Lotus’ “performance through light weight” philosophy).

I wish I could tell you the price as well but we all have to wait for more details about Eco Elise till the show begins. Till then, do ponder on this green baby over any other car. Don’t forget Eco Elise could become your own Zen garden for a peaceful Lotus Meditation!
