Texas teenager Lucas Laborde will be driving to school in an all-electric car that he built all by himself. No, we are not kidding when we say that he will drive to school in it as the guy is still only 17 years old. While most teens would spend the summer away doing far more attractive and far less productive stuff, Lucas spent it converting his gas-guzzling old car into an all-electric vehicle with no emissions. So how many hundreds of thousands of dollars did he spend on it? Lucas just spent around $ 10,000 in making the revamp!

The way crude oil prices are shooting up and the markets are shooting down across the planet, it seems only logical that companies like Chrysler are trying to go the ‘small electric car’ way. The Peapod has been around for long and many of its users feel that the little car is wonderful for green urban commuting. Chrysler have gone a step further and created the Peapod Gem. The new version of the Peapod has cool new features and the same old engine. While that is a bit of a damp deal, it still is a green step forward for a company known for making giant gas-guzzling vehicles.

GEM stands for “Green Eco Mobility” and this is Chrysler’s new promise when it comes to the new Peapod. The car has an integrated iPhone dock and flashy new interiors to go with the electric engine. Since the engine configurations remain unaltered, it will still have a range of around 35 miles and one full charge will give you exactly the same. The top speed of 25 mph is not really a thrilling deal, but as a daily urban commuter, an adventure is not your priority.
Chrysler’s new GEM is a cool new electric vehicle that might struggle with the better electric cars that are all set to roll out as competition. All that competition is pretty good new though for us who want to see emission-free roads one day.

There is good news for all the Chrysler fans. The famous car brand has decided to present an electric version of its Voyager MPV to the world by 2010. Research is on and eco-lovers even got a peek of its looks at the Detroit Motor Show, yep this new eco-car will be based on the ecoVoyager concept.
Information is limited at the moment. But we do know that this zero-emission car will have range of 300 miles. A neat deal for an MPV that can accommodate the entire family plus the luggage!
As if this wasn’t enough. Chrysler is also working on a model that will be a good reply for rival Chevrolet’s Volt, which will be launched in 2012. A small gasoline engine in the Chrysler model will be busy topping up batteries when they drop below 40% charge.

Expect comedian Jay Leno to say such an extraordinary thing. And like most of the times when he does, it makes a lot of sense. The car-enthusiast made a very interesting talk in his editorial for Portfolio Magazine. According to him, most American kids have no American brand loyalty. They have grown up for a ‘default’ fondness for Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota. Yes, all non-American brands.
But Leno feels that going the eco way could help the American automobile industry to take chances at the car popularity charts. Green is something exciting, something bold and something different. America is good with technology and perhaps this would be the best bet to get the buyers back. In other words, cars like Chevy Volt, a battery-powered vehicle, or hydrogen cars from Chrysler, Ford and G.M. will make the difference to the automobile market hierarchy.
